Therapeutic Indications

EPIPHENICOL is indicated in the topical treatment of blepharitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, conjunctivitis, keratitis and kerataconjunctivitis due to susceptible organisms.

Dosage and Administration

EPIPHENICOL Sterile Eye Ointment:
Topical, a thin strip ( approximately 1 cm. ) of ointment every 3 hours or more frequently.

Warnings and Precautions

Pregnancy: Problems in humans have not been documented.
Breastfeeding: Problems in humans have not been documented.
Pediatrics: No pediatrics-specific problems have been documented to date.

Contraindications

Intolerance to chloramphenicol.
Hypersensitivity to the product.
Patient with bone marrow depression or blood dyscrasias.
Pregnancy.

Undesirable Effects

Rarely, burning, stinging, blurred vision and blood dyscrasias.
The mechanism for the irreversible aplastic anaemia following ophthalmic use of chloramphenicol has not been established.

Pharmacological Properties

EPIPHENICOL is bacteriostatic. It diffuses through the bacterial cell wall and binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes where transfer of aminoacids to growing peptide chains is prevented, thus inhibiting peptide bond formation and subsequent protein synthesis.
EPIPHENICOL is active against E.coli, H. influenzae, Klebsiella species, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococci, and Moraxella lacunata. It may also be effective against Rickettsiae and Mycoplasma.

Packaging

EPIPHENICOL Sterile Eye Ointment: Boxes of 1 or 100 ophthalmic tubes of 5 g each.
